Description

This game breeds moments when you forget about the scoring track and just want to make some brandy for the round—not because it is potentially the perfect maximization in an exacting coin-to-Spirit-Point ratio, but because you just want to enjoy yourself making brandy. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Little things like storing tokens in whisky barrel shaped trays always bring a rye smile to my face. Better yet, Distilled is a great entry-level game for those non-gamers who could be persuaded into a game night solely because of the game’s central conceit. It works great at taking you through the process of making different spirits whilst giving you enough of an economic puzzle to back up the fun of getting the best out of your booze.

Out of the cards that are left in the stack, this is what is going to determine what spirit you have brewed. Now, if you’ll excuse me, my wife is wondering when that second round of old fashioneds will be ready! If they were simply discarded, then that would likely tip my thoughts on this game way over in the opposite direction. I think it’s the feeling of this shared market of cards, working up from the cheap, common ones, to the bigger and better ones. Because the engine-building in this game is very sparse, if present at all, the seven turns are mostly uniform.

Sell Phase – Players bottle their spirits, score spirit points, receive money and gain a label bonus. The catch of the distilling phase is that, after shuffling, the top and bottom cards of your ingredient deck for the round are sent back to your hand to simulate deadly washback produced at the beginning and end of batches. Then deal each player two distiller identity cards to choose from, but only use the ones that match the regions of the spirits you’re using (there’s handy lists in the rule book for this). You then take all the cards in your washbag, give them a shuffle (face down), remove the top and bottom card and the remaining are the ones you will use to brew your spirits. When you make and sell a spirit you’ll also gain a label of that type (if available) and use it to cover one of the bonus spaces on your player board. Purchase new ingredients and invest in upgrades to your distillery, all while distilling a new spirit and sending it to the warehouse. When you create a game, just select 'Hotseat' instead of solo or multiplayer, and then be sure to sit at green, red, yellow or blue (pink if you have a 5th player). Give each player a player board and clip board, decide which set of spirits you’ll be using and give each player a card of that set to slot into their clipboard. We also found the private goals to be a little fiddly and trying to figure them out meant end game scoring took a bit longer than I’d like.

A typical round is made up of four phase; Market, Distill, Sell and Age phase and players will gain “Spirit” points over the course of seven rounds. I thought this mechanic was so interesting when I played the game, it really felt like the actual process. Comparing the ingredients to your unlocked recipes to see which you have brewed can be a make-or-break part of the round. So let’s talk about the empty gin bottle in the room (I know a few gin drinkers who will have shuddered at the thought of that sentence) The distilling mechanic is very random.Market Phase - Players will acquire new ingredients, items, upgrade and staff to add into their distillery. Every batch of booze you distil needs ingredients; namely water, sugars (grains, vegetables, or fruits), and yeast. Each distillery owner has a “signature spirit”; some of those spirits score 8 points, but others score double that. Although I have known many people over the years that have collected interesting bottles, for a game about distilling, it seems a little mismatched. The head and tail are normally put back into the next batch you are distilling (don't worry its distilled again and no longer bad for you).
