Description

Trauma affects the brain’s speech centers and can limit the effectiveness of traditional talk-based therapies. Shaun McNiff is internationally recognized as a founder and leading figure in the arts and healing field.

This dual set of experience, both within the mental health sector and the artistic, sets her up to speak with conviction through this publication. Mike’s personal outlook on people and life has had quite a few crucial changes since he started working with Hagar. McNiff expertly combines examples from his own experiences with a hopeful vision for how the artists within all of us holds the key to our own healing and the healing connection with others. Art therapist Jacqueline Jones and Army Staff Sergeant Jonathan Meadows discuss his painting at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital’s Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic in Virginia. One was of a very troubled 8 year old student with significant attention and anger issues such that he was unable to complete any schoolwork in class. Building off of their lived experiences, professional expertise, and interests, they share ways in which art can be healing. We found that individuals who worked with an art therapist had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their saliva; they also reported improved mood and self-efficacy and lower perceived stress than those who made art alone. This constant back-and-forth, this empty space between the two, is the source of everything— the meaning of life,” adds Lemarquis in the interview.

We learn how to transform the most mundane aspects of life through artistic encounters and to engage with our most painful challenges creatively. Shaun was selected by Mary Ann Brussat for the original Living Spiritual Teachers Project recognizing his contributions to everyday spirituality and the enhancement of creative imagination. In this book, Shaun McNiff--a leader in expressive arts therapy for more than three decades--reflects on a wide spectrum of activities aimed at reviving art's traditional healing function. He cites visits to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, as well as Niki de Saint Phalle’s giant 1966 sculpture, the HON – en katedral , where visitors could enter the sculpture’s vaginal opening. The field of art therapy is discovering that artistic expression can be a powerful means of personal transformation and emotional and spiritual healing.

A deep sense of grief and loss underlies trauma, and art therapy provides a metaphorical way to address the complex inner struggles of service members. Art therapists guide people in connecting or reconnecting with the creative practices that support mental health, and that help people to grapple with life challenges and uncertainties. I hope my work provides inspiration for a person to do today what they couldn’t do yesterday, no matter what it is. The Russian museum had some six Van Eycks, the American museum had none: I considered that it would have been wrong to prevent a great city that wanted these works from obtaining them.During the sharing session, one of the other participants remarked on how my piece in particular spoke to her deeply because it brought to her mind memories of peaceful wilderness kayak journeys. I'm still so moved every time I think about how my art can help someone through tough times in their lives by bringing them sunshine and optimism. One of the first projects was an audio playlist that included collaborations with a neuroscientist, a somatic experience practitioner, a therapist, a psychiatrist, educators, and mindfulness instructors.

Almost all participants took their creations home, and many have told me that they have kept their artwork in their home or office.Similarly, science has shown we feel a “distance” from artwork reproduced on a screen, compared to being in its physical presence.
