About this deal

To celebrate Commando’s golden anniversary, and as part of its series looking at how the British Army is depicted in popular culture, the National Army Museum has created an exhibition of some of the comic’s stunning covers. By the late 1980s, a great number of venerable war titles (most of which were either anthologies or else World War II-themed titles) from the late 1950s and 1960s " Silver Age of Comic Books" died out. War comics series that ended long runs in the 1980s, following publication of over 100 issues, include: For many, like US Air Force pilot Alec Killian, survival will mean shedding some of his humanity in exchange for biotech and machine. Follow one pilot’s journey through mankind’s worst, only to discover its best. Showcase Presents The Unknown Soldier Vol. 1 (reprints "Unknown Soldier" stories from Star-Spangled War Stories #151–190) The Activity. The evolution of global conflict necessitates the evolution of warfare to rise and meet the call. The United States’ latest, most advanced, and most secret special operations group is hidden inside the INTELLIGENCE SUPPORT ACTIVITY. They are tasked with fixing botched operations, wielding bleeding-edge tech, and planning and executing lethal action in the utmost secrecy.

Cold War. Acclaimed creator John Byrne (Next Men) releases his latest creation, MI-6 agent Michael Swann. In Swann’s opening adventure, “The Damoclese Contract,” the secret agent is called on to stop a defecting British scientist from granting the Soviets complete nuclear dominion over the free world… promising ample doses of intrigue and espionage. But for many, the comic’s success relies on a lot more than this, and, if anything, their quality should attract a great deal more critical acclaim than they do. One admirer of the genre is Robert Fleming, Curator of Fine and Decorative Art at the Army museum, who put the ‘Draw your weapons’ exhibition together: Showcase Presents The Haunted Tank Vol. 2 (reprints "The Haunted Tank" stories from G.I. Combat #120–157) Area 51. Though nearly everyone has heard of it, almost no one has known anything about it . . . until now. Located in the remote Nevada desert near the dry bed of Groom Lake, Area 51 is the most famous military installation in the world that doesn’t “officially” exist. Uncensored by commercial editorial restrictions, Wood pulled out all the stops – producing a thrilling and salacious Cold War spy serial run amok with brutal violence and titillating sex all in an effort to boost morale and support our troops! Under the employ of our government’s Central Intelligence Agency, Cannon experiences action like no other agent!

PS, The Preventive Maintenance Monthly, a US Army publication that uses the comics format for training purposes Showcase Presents Enemy Ace Vol. 1 (reprints "Enemy Ace" stories from Our Army at War #151, 153, 155, Showcase #57–58, Star-Spangled War Stories #138–152, 158, 181–183, and 200, Detective Comics #404, Men at War #1–3, 8–10, 12–14, 19–20, The Unknown Soldier #252–253, 260–261, 265–267, DC Special #26) In the post-World War II era, comic books devoted solely to war stories began appearing and gained popularity in the United States and Canada through the 1950s, the 1960s, and 1970s, i.e. covering the time periods of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The titles tended to concentrate on US military events, generally in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Most publishers produced anthologies; industry giant DC Comics' war comics included such long-running titles as All-American Men of War, Our Army at War, Our Fighting Forces, and Star Spangled War Stories. Another prolific publisher of war comics was Charlton Comics, which produced a wide variety of titles beginning in the 1950s, such as Battlefield Action, Fightin' Army, and Fightin' Marines. Quality also began publishing G.I. Combat during this era. Marvel Comics also produced war titles, notably Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos. First, in the original 30 Days of Night, dive deep into the nightmare world of Barrow, Alaska, where month-long winter darkness calls a siren song to a band of bloodthirsty vampires. The town’s only hope of survival lies in the hands of Stella and Eben, the local husband-and-wife sheriff team. Robert also says that he has been told by quite a few blokes visiting the exhibition that the comics had a part to play in them joining up for a career in the Services.
