Really helpful in developing an understanding of not only how this approach works, but also a greater understanding of the Self. It is now 25 years since the first edition of Person-Centred Counselling in Action appeared, offering the definitive exposition of the theory and practice of the person-centred approach. However I have read more engaging texts where both the flow of reading and language used entices you more readily to read every page.

Person-Centred Counselling in Action - Waterstones

Dave Mearns is formerlyDirector of the Counselling Unit and Professor of Counselling at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. The Rogerian client-centered approach emphasizes the person coming to form an appropriate understanding of their world and themselves. Rogers believed that for people to grow and fulfill their potential it is important that they are valued as themselves. If you simply present yourself in your official role, the client is unlikely to want to reveal personal details about themselves. My personal view of helping someone is based upon my own past experiences for both myself and my observation of others. The only unpleasant thing about this recording is the verbal mentioning of all references within a sentence or at the end of a sentence. I am firstly going to focus on a brief history of person-centred therapy, then look at the characteristics and key elements of person-centred therapy.

Person-Centred Counselling in Action: Counselling in Action

This is an excellent text which provides a concise update on person centred counselling and is very relevant for coaching which is my main interest. The only thing that bothered near the end was how the reader mispronounced the word 'quantitative' as "quantative". This is because they see the therapist and client as equal partners rather than as an expert treating a patient.I loved the examples of counsellor-client interactions given throughout the book and the case study in the final chapters because they made it easy to see how the ideas in the book are applied in real life, not just in an idealised version of real life where everything goes according to a straightforward script (as is sometimes the case in "practical" examples in other books)! The self-concept does not always fit with reality, though, and how we see ourselves may differ greatly from how others see us. Person-Centred Counselling in Action, Fourth Edition will be an invaluable resource for those embarking on their first stages of training. His writing has influenced a generation of trainees in the field of counselling, counselling psychology and psychotherapy, and his books are widely adopted on training programmes across the world.

This is a deliberate change from psychoanalysis and behavioral therapies, where the patient is diagnosed and treated by a doctor. The updates are seamless and form a coherent state of the art presentation of person-centred theory and practice. Her colleagues described her plans as ‘ridiculous,’ and her parents, who are very proud that their daughter is a teacher, have told Joyce that they will not speak to her again if she does leave teaching to become a dancer.
