Stories like this one may begin to open their understanding to the fact that other people do not have access to the resources they take for granted. Great story with fun rhythmic lines that build on the story, along the lines of "the house that jack built. I first came across this book at a book fair in Kuala Lumpur in 1997 and I think my little son and I must have read it every day for a couple of years. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The birds and animals started to migrate and a herdsman named Ki-pat wanted to end the drought in Kapiti plain so that his cattle could graze on grass.

This sensory story is perfect for when you want the children to interact with the story, giving many ideas for how to represent the different sights, sounds and touch of the story. The pictures show a bit about the way of life of the Maasai in Kenya and Tanzania including the traditional red clothing that helps identify the men as Maasai and the elaborately and colorful beaded collars. One day, I was helping the librarian clean out books that were no longer used… Right after she told me I could have any book, this one popped up. Adapted to the rhythm of the fairy tale, “The House That Jack Built,” this story is an expression of a folk tale that was discovered by an anthropologist in the early years of the twentieth century. I found that all the lines fell between 8 and 12 syllables, and that the pattern of stresses tended to be anapestic, two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed one.

In this traditional tale, discovered in Kenya, a young herd boy Ki-pat must find a way to end the dreadful drought that has come to the beautiful Kapiti Plain and save the animals that live there. I think a perfectly consistent rhythm would have veered in the direction of boring and singsongy text, so it’s good to see the “rules” judiciously broken. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Other Classroom Uses: This book could be used in conjunction with a lesson or unit on the basic needs of all living things. When LeVar's plans of attending a picnic and softball game are derailed by a downpour, he decides to stay home to read a few books instead. Verna Aardema was an award-winning American author who published retellings of many African traditional tales. A big favorite of theirs and mine was Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain by Verna Aardema and illustrated by Beatriz Vidal. The sensory stimuli don't just support the words in telling the story, if well chosen, they tell the story in their own right.

With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. But the story begins with a 10 line introduction and the middle 6 lines of the introduction have unstressed endings. In this story, the landscape and animals of Kapiti Plain have suffered greatly due to a lack of rain. Organization: This book could be used as a mentor text for creating a class book with a cumulative refrain. It follows the plight of the human and animal inhabitants of Nandi, who are suffering under an extended period of drought and seek to bring rain back to their village.

Beatriz Vidal's beautiful illustrations provide a charming accompaniment to the story, which would make an ideal story-hour selection. For more advanced students or as a class shared writing experience, a different myth could be rewritten in the repetitive pattern of the book. Because of the repetitive pattern and rhythm, this book could be adapted for reader's theater to build students' fluency. Beatriz Vidal's gorgeous illustrations gives a sense of ancient simplicity that compliments the story in every way.
