Description

The upfront investment is not trivial but once you have the jig you can use it to make as many MFT style tops as you want. I guess that can also be said for various jigs and aids, but those were created for a purpose that the Festool MFT's were not. As flat overall as the very best plywood with a surface smoothness nearly equal to MDF but much more durable and moisture resistant.

For multifunctional tables and workbenches, the 20 mm diameter perforated grid system has become established. The largest range of accessories for multifunctional tables exists for this, such as workbench clamps, bench dogs and other devices. CNC machine time would be your only variable, or the additional wear cost on bits for each hole drilled. If you’re not familiar with the LR 32 system – what it does, is allow you to (in conjunction with a Festool router, drill precise holes at multiples of 32mm).

My combination square was still locked to 100mm having used it to scribe the centre line on my jig, and I could use that to mark up 100mm in from my reference corner of the table top along both the long and short edges.

I also have a 20mm forstner bit but since it's exactly 20mm, if it's not perfectly at 90 degrees, the bench dogs doesn't fit. In this video I'll be making an MFT style top without using a CNC or any expensive specialist jigs or guide systems - just using some basic tools that you probably already have, and a home made jig.Using the OF1400 router with the 20 mm cutter, with the MDF over a sheet of insulating foam, plunge the corner hole, and then move the LR32 guide three stops (96 mm), and plunge the next hole. I made this simple jig based off an existing top with extreme care and it works very well to duplicate hole patterns.
