I'm torn on whether I would recommend this book, since the subject matter could possibly offend or bother some.

I think if I'd read this before the age of like, fifteen or so, it would've been a 5-star read, as my taste and expectations weren't quite as developed then as they are now. Brooding Cameron with his scarred hand, strange Lilias with her fear of bones, and Piper, who seems just a bit too good to be true. And I also liked Sophie, who starts out with feet of clay but ends up as a fully paid-up member of the evil-fighting squad. Rebecca, finally too injured to move, was left with her frozen Charlotte doll to freeze to death just like Charlotte in the story. After a tragic event in her life, Sophie heads to her uncle’s home which was previously a school for young girls. I think your average non-horror reader would find this one really creepy though and it does have the potential for nightmares. Well, by any reader, I mean anyone willing to read a book that will leave you with nightmares for at least a week.

If you’re scared of needles, just a warning (as I am too) there are a few scenes involving needles in people’s eyes, so I’d just flick past those bits! The original investigation concluded with most of the evidence pointing to Sal, who was found dead in the woods, apparently by suicide. Alex Bell’s chilling novel is part of the Red Eye series, perfect for fans of Juno Dawson’s Say Her Name and Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood . Once I started it (with a suitably creepy prologue that immediately reeled me in), I read the entire book straight through!

I’ve never been more grateful that I don’t have a load of dolls in my bedroom or I probably wouldn’t have slept since reading this book. The writing was quite simplistic, so although the book is recommended for older readers, I reckon it would be fine for younger readers that can handle more mature content.

This book ticked a lot of the typical horror clichés: a mysterious death, a scary house, creepy little girl, weird brother, family secrets and DOLLS.For some years these ranged from dolphin trainer to animal shelter vet but then, at fifteen, she had an epiphany involving John and Robert Kennedy and decided to become a lawyer instead. Little did they know what they were about to unleash and in some very frightening first opening scenes I knew exactly what I was in for during this book, or at least I thought I did. She's sitting in a café with her childhood best friend Jay, and is of course oblivious to the fact that he's completely in love with her. Since the death of their sibling Rebecca, years before, the family has forever been fractured, and Sophie had no idea how deep the fissures run. As everything begins to fall apart around her, Sophia is left to figure out who or what is causing all the chaos before it's too late.
