These books capture the essence of young adult contemporary fiction and share some similarities with “My Life Next Door” regarding themes, relationships, and character development.

Samantha takes refuge each night on the balcony off her room where she's able to watch the Garretts, the family who lives next door. They're the ones with the 25 kids who obviously never learned what birth control was for or how to properly care for a pool, a yard or a house but managed to snag their own reality T.V. show on TLC. Oh, wait...wrong family. The Garretts really only have 8 kids and yeah, they have all those other things I mentioned, save for the reality T.V. show but that's they way they're treated by a lot of people in town. People feel the need to comment on their lives, how many kids they have, etc., etc., What outsiders fail to miss is how much love the Garretts have going on. Samantha and Jase kiss several times, and as their relationship progresses, they undress. While kissing in their underwear, Jase becomes aroused and is embarrassed by it. Samantha tells him not be embarrassed because she loves him. He tells her that he loves her, too. a) The story is predictable. Knew from the beginning Cal wasn't Tim's and also that Jake and Nate would end up adopting him, how convenient, right?I'm known for my book boy crushes, but those are usually reserved for the teenagers, so you can imagine my surprise when I fell completely in love with George, the 4 year old walking encyclopedia of the Garrett family. There were times when he stole this story right out from under Jase and Samantha's noses and stole my heart in the process. This being said, this book was awesome. I loved it and i can't wait to read more from this author. I still wonder what would I do in Sam's shoes. I am definitely not sure.

Tim didn't give a damn about Alice, he was only ever concerned about his own problems/feelings and then at the end he was all about Cal (which was super boring). The only reason Tim seemed to even want Alice was because he found her hot and liked her family, I never got the sense he truly knew her or even cared for her, his feelings for her were so cold (well, except for when he was horny). That night, when Jase sneaks into Samantha’s room through her window, he asks her if she has been keeping him a secret from everyone because she is ashamed of him. Samantha denies it, and they fall asleep in her bed together. The next morning, they kiss and undress. Samantha tells Jase that she wants to have sex, and he tells her that he also wants to, but not in a rush. After they discover they are both virgins and agree to take some time before having sex, Jase leaves. A few days later, Jase and Samantha buy condoms at the local drug store. Although she has heard a health-class lecture on sex, seen R-rated movies, listened to her sister brag about how many times a day she and boyfriend Flip can have sex and has read books with sexual scenes, Samantha thinks there is still much she does not know about sex. She wonders if instinct will take over, if sex will be good right away, if you have to acquire a taste for it, if sex will hurt the first time and how long birth-control pills take to be effective.I guess what I mean is that this is a very sweet romantic story that went straight to my heart and doesn't plan to leave too soon! This is why I read YA books - to get this feeling of joy, of happiness, of love.. Because I simply LOVE feeling my head so light and having my heart skip a beat remembering how it felt to fall in love for the first time (and every time after that).

After seeing Clay and her mother passionately kissing on the family’s front porch, Samantha often wonders about the nature of Grace and Clay’s relationship. The thought usually grosses her out. Grace is unusually agreeable to Clay’s suggestions, which prompts Nan to ask Samantha if sex is what caused the changes in Grace’s attitude and demeanor.Tim and Nan’s parents are oblivious to their son’s substance abuse and their daughter’s cheating and depression. When Tim quits working on Grace’s campaign, his mother tells him he is a loser. Throughout the course of the novel, Sam struggles to make her own decisions and pull away from the person her mother is trying to make her be to become herself. Her relationship with Jase helps her grow into a person that is more aware of the world and less reluctant to make mistakes. By the end of the novel, she is more concerned with doing what she believes is right rather than what she thinks is expected of her. After Grace initially won the election and became a state senator, she spent a lot of time away from Samantha and Tracy. Samantha said Tracy went through a period of rebellion where she experimented with drugs and drinking, shoplifted and slept with many boys.
