Each story begins with a small blurb providing context of the story before the actual biblical text begins. It is written in a very engaging narrative style. It’s the closest style I’ve found to The Jesus Storybook Bible (more on that below).

It’s not a good bible for reading aloud because you have to read comic stuff to yourself for it to make since. It is very long and includes a lot of stories not typically included in children’s bibles, so for that I absolutely love it! The following are not full children’s Bibles, but cover the major highlights of the Story of Salvation History. Lydia helped me out by making this list for all of you. I hope this helps you choose your children’s bible with confidence!Because it doesn’t have very many stories, I consider it a book that it beautiful for the Catholic home collection, but it can’t be your only children’s bible. It’s just not long enough. Then God said, “Let there be something to divide the water in two!” 7 So God made the air to divide the water in two. Some of the water was above the air, and some of the water was below it. 8 God named the air “sky.” Evening passed, and morning came. This was the second day. Lydia loves this Bible. She got if as a present for making her First Reconciliation. She’s loved it from the beginning, and reads it on her own. I really wish I could broadly recommend this Bible. The writing is beautiful and lyrical. It’s a favorite among Christians, and for good reason. What I particularly love about this Bible is that it shows how the New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and how the Old is fulfilled in the New. Jesus is the through-thread in this book, and it makes clear God’s plan for salvation since the Fall. This ranks as our favorite Catholic children’s Bible. Although its title implies that it is a collection of Bible stories, I find this to be a much more thorough and complete presentation of Scripture than other smaller collections of Bible stories (see more on those below).

It is long and includes a lot of bible stories that typical children’s bibles don’t include, which is nice. However, the actual Bible holds primacy always. Sacred Scripture is the actual Word of God, and our kids need to hear it. It is this Word that is living and effective, it is this Word that does not return to the Father void. Reading Sacred Scripture to our children plants the seeds deeply in their hearts. (This is why we always encourage reading from the actual Bible throughout our resources). I believe your children’s bible should have all the quality of any beautiful picture book for children. You don’t want your kids to be wowed with the colors and artwork in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and then open a children’s bible to find ugly clip art and less than stellar stories. What message does that send to your child about the secular world vs. the christian world?Of course these are picture books for kids based on bible stories, not actual bibles themselves. There is one actual bible in this list, and it’s at the bottom of the post. It is tied to the liturgical year. Beginning in Autumn, it walks through Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, Septuagesima, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, and Corpus Christi. I personally don’t love this bible, but the kids said I should include it, so let’s take a look at The Picture Bible. I personally love the style of The Action Bible so much that I feel like there’s no reason to have them both. However, if you have a kid that loves comics and the pictures in The Action Bible seem too extreme to you, this children’s bible would be the perfect choice.
