The Bruno Cremer Maigret series is excellent, because it is in French with English subtitles, which I don't mind. Having read most of the short and long Maigret stories and seen a number of Bruno Cremer's version (French with subtitles), I had looked forward to this version if only because it did not require me to read subtitles.

However, I didn't realise that it could not be played on my DVD player, which is not compatible PAL.with Rowan Atkinson is an effort of scenery, but for French it remains a pale copy and especially the character of Maigret is soft and insignificant, nothing to do with his massive physique and his "presence" in the books. The problem with the many reviews is that they are not sorted as to the major DVD TV Series year and Star. The series has been remastered for HD TV and the picture quality is amazing compared to the original series shown on TV. The last few nights I have been watching on Britbox the newest Maigret series starring Rowan Atkinson. Episode 3 has maybe the oddest characters and the most unsettling atmosphere, which is saying something. I am a huge fan of the MhZ International Mystery series where you can catch this show every few weeks. As a result, English subtitles are provided, but this also presents an excellent opportunity to brush up on your old French language skills, assuming you have them! Sporting his pipe that seems a nod to Sherlock Holmes, the pragmatic and refined Maigret investigates murders in his singular unhurried manner and inevitably discovers the truth. By the way, Rupert Davies recorded a really fun song in 1963, about pipe smoking, “Smoking My Pipe” . Turning off the personalized advertising setting won’t stop you from seeing Etsy ads, but it may make the ads you see less relevant or more repetitive.

Appearances from poorly dubbed Hungarians are kept to a minimum and occasionally an unknown actor shows up to give an outstanding performance such as Susie Lindeman who absolutely steals the show with her witty and loveable performance in "Maigret and the Maid". The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. The photography belonged to film noir and the stories, carried along by Bruno Cremer, have psychological depth worthy of more than one viewing. The best episodes of the first season, "Maigret Goes to School" and "Maigret Sets a Trap", do offer some fun, but they are weak and undistinguished efforts compared to other ITV mystery shows of the time and certainly when compared to the Bruno Cremer series.

Bruno Cremer is my favorite, but the need to rely on English subtitles probably is a negative for many. Gambon's Maigret is affable, poetic, emotional, sympathetic, and works in close concert with his men; his Paris (Budapest) is sunny and bright. John Warnaby, for instance, ruins "Maigret on Home Ground" with his uncouth, unemotional performance of a highly complex character from the original novel. At a small café near the canal where a headless body has been found, Maigret is intrigued by the reticent proprietress and tries to draw her out. perhaps it was the BRits watching other Brits and who cares about authenticity of accent or pacing of plot line/direction.

Secondly, and most importantly, there's the main cast all of whom are superb and carry the shoddy first season on their shoulders. Bruno Cremer, who portrays Jules Maigret, is perfect for his role as a serious homicide investigator. Atkinson, despite lacking the proper physical stature does a good job, although his portrayal is uber sensitive. Sporting his pipe that seems a nod to Sherlock Holmes, the pragmatic, reserved, and refined Maigret investigates murders in his singular unhurried manner and inevitably discovers the truth.

It is a fast-paced, entertaining romp through the hallowed halls of power, with several surprisingly expressionistic moments. In the 1990s, several prestigious adaptations of famous detective novels were made by various ITV outlets. Granada had started the trend with their outstanding Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett, LWT followed it up with their equally definitive Poirot with David Suchet, while Central gave us my personal favourite, the John Thaw Morse series, and the less iconic but nonetheless highly entertaining Cadfael with Derek Jacobi in the lead. The first two originally aired in March and December of 2016; the last two in April and December of 2017. R. Atkinson playing Maigret, in the most recent series, would be my second choice, very close to Bruno Cremer, as a very good interpreter of the role.
